The Cowboys got off to a hot start, scoring touchdowns on their first two drives. Prescott threw a touchdown pass to Lamb on the Cowboys' opening drive, and then running back Tony Pollard ran for a touchdown on the Cowboys' second drive. The Cowboys led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Chargers answered with a touchdown of their own to start the second quarter. Herbert threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen. However, the Cowboys answered with a field goal to extend their lead to 17-7.
