South Korea and the United States have successfully launched a collaborative solar coronagraph to the International Space Station (ISS). The instrument, called the Coronal Diagnostics Experiment (CODEX), is an important step in understanding the solar wind and the Sun's outer atmosphere. The Coronagraph, developed by the Korea Aerospace Administration (CASA) and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, will study the Sun's corona, blocking out its bright light and observing the solar wind in greater detail.

The purpose of the mission is to discover how the solar wind is heated and accelerated from the Sun's surface to millions of degrees and moves at speeds of nearly a million miles per hour. CODEX is unique in that it will measure not only the density of the solar wind, but also its temperature and speed. The data will provide new insights into space weather phenomena, which will have important implications for satellite communications and Earth's magnetic environment.
