California is shook by 7.0-magnitude earthquake near Eureka

California is shook by 7.0-magnitude earthquake near Eureka

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey has struck Northern California.

An earthquake struck near the coastal city of Eureka at 10:44 a.m. (5/12/2024)  PST Thursday, prompting a tsunami warning from the National Weather Service.

It was initially reported as a magnitude 6.6 quake, but was soon upgraded by the USGS.

A tsunami warning is in effect from the coast of Davenport to the Oregon-California border, including San Francisco Bay.

Residents are advised to evacuate inland or to higher ground, out of the water and away from beaches, and not return until deemed safe by local emergency officials.
